How Powers Health continues to build on a legacy of care
Two years ago, one of Northwest Indiana's most trusted healthcare organizations took an important step forward. Community Healthcare System became Powers Health, marking a new chapter in its long-standing commitment to serving patients throughout Northwest Indiana.
While the name may have changed, what matters most has remained the same: the physicians, nurses, staff, hospitals and commitment to exceptional care that generations of families have come to know and trust. Families have celebrated the birth of children, found healing during illness and received comfort during difficult times within the walls of Powers Health hospitals – Community Hospital in Munster; St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago; St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart; and Powers Health Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point.
The transition to Powers Health was not the result of a merger, acquisition or ownership change. It was an evolution of the organization designed to better reflect a more connected, integrated healthcare system.
Honoring a visionary legacy
The name Powers Health was chosen to honor Donald S. Powers, one of the original directors and president of Community Foundation, which later became Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc., the parent organization of Powers Health. His vision helped bring advanced healthcare closer to home, ensuring that residents of Northwest Indiana had access to expert medical care delivered with compassion.
Today, that vision continues to guide the organization as it expands access to specialized services, advanced technology and coordinated care.
More than a new name
When the organization officially adopted the Powers Health name on July 1, 2024, the transition was never about becoming a different healthcare system. It was about creating a clearer identity that reflected strength and unity while distinguishing it from other healthcare organizations throughout the state that use the word "Community" in their names. The new identity reflects what the organization is today while preserving the values and reputation it has earned over decades of service.
A symbol of unity and strength
The Powers Health logo tells a story of its own. The design incorporates a pentagon that pays tribute to the system's heritage while symbolizing resilience and success. Interconnecting ribbons surrounding the center represent the collaboration among caregivers, employees and facilities across the organization. The design communicates a powerful message: healthcare is strongest when people work together.
That spirit of unity continues to define Powers Health today as it delivers advanced care in key specialties including cancer, heart, neuroscience, orthopedic and stroke services.
Looking ahead
As Powers Health looks to the future, it does so with deep gratitude for everyone who helped build its legacy as Community Healthcare System.
Powers Health continues to advance healthcare across Northwest Indiana through investments in innovative technology, expanded services and state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the region’s growing needs.
Construction is underway on a five-story outpatient center on the Community Hospital campus in Munster. The facility will house physician offices and a variety of outpatient services, including cardiac rehabilitation, imaging, infusion, neurology, physical therapy and noninvasive cardiology procedures currently provided at Community Hospital.
The 125,724-square-foot center, anticipated to open in early 2028, is located at 802 MacArthur Blvd. between the Community Medical Professional Center and the parking garage. Expanded in 2024 in anticipation of the project, the garage will support the new facility, which represents an approximately $80 million investment and the first phase of a broader expansion. Once complete, the development will encompass approximately 440,000 square feet.
In Valparaiso, expansion also is underway at the St. Mary Medical Center Outpatient Center, formerly the Valparaiso Health Center, marking the facility’s third expansion in five years.
The newest two-story, 71,000-square-foot addition will include expanded Outpatient Therapy Services, Orthopedic physician offices, Audiology services and additional space for primary and specialty care practices. Renovations within the existing facility also will expand Cardiology Services on the first and second floors and Neurodiagnostic Services on the third floor.
These investments reflect Powers Health’s ongoing commitment to improving access to advanced care while remaining focused on the values that have defined the organization for generations. As Powers Health continues to grow and innovate, its dedication to providing compassionate, exceptional care close to home remains unchanged.
