NORTHWEST INDIANA | Community Hospital, Northwest Indiana’s only accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center, has earned recertification from The Joint Commission and received its prestigious Gold Seal of Approval®, a nationally recognized symbol of excellence in healthcare quality and patient safety.

The certification recognizes Community Hospital’s commitment to delivering advanced, life-saving care for patients experiencing the most severe and complex types of stroke.

As part of the recertification process, Community Hospital underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review by The Joint Commission. Surveyors evaluated the hospital’s compliance with nationally recognized standards through observations, interviews and a comprehensive assessment of patient care practices. These standards are developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, measurement experts and patients.

“When someone suffers a stroke, every second matters,” said Aamir Badruddin, MD, medical director of Neuroscience and Neuroendovascular Services for Powers Health. “Our Comprehensive Stroke Center team is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients. This recertification reflects our unwavering commitment to providing the most advanced, effective stroke care available in Northwest Indiana.”

The Joint Commission’s Comprehensive Stroke Center certification is awarded for a two-year period and evaluates how healthcare organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to continuously improve care, enhance patient safety and prepare patients and caregivers for successful recovery after discharge.

“Recertification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center validates the extraordinary care our multidisciplinary stroke team provides every hour of every day,” said Randy Neiswonger, CEO of Community Hospital. “While we are proud of this achievement, we are even more grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”

Community Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center is supported by the certified Primary Stroke Centers at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Together, these teams provide a coordinated network of stroke care, enabling patients to receive rapid evaluation and treatment, including access to advanced neuro-interventional services.

As a destination center for complex stroke cases, Community Hospital serves patients throughout Northwest Indiana and beyond, including those transferred from other Primary Stroke Centers across Northern Indiana.

As a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, Community Hospital offers:

  • 24/7 access to minimally invasive catheter-based stroke treatments
  • A dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit
  • Around-the-clock neurosurgical coverage, including complex neuroendovascular procedures
  • Advanced treatment for large-core ischemic, hemorrhagic and other complex stroke cases
  • Access to innovative research through participation in national stroke clinical trials
