MRI Technologist
What is your role at Community Healthcare System?
I am an MRI technologist and lead tech among a knowledgeable and skilled group of co-workers in the special imaging department at Community Hospital. I also am licensed as an MRI safety officer.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My inspiration came from my dad. He was familiar with hospital settings and knew of my desire to help and serve others. He pointed me in the direction of healthcare and, specifically, radiology. After looking into it further, radiology looked like a perfect fit.
What is a typical day like for you?
My day in MRI begins by organizing our patient schedules and balancing our patient volume by creating a steady workflow. In addition to scanning patients and keeping them comfortable during their exam, patient care includes maintaining a safe work environment for everyone in the MRI rooms and surrounding areas. All of us take MRI safety very seriously, and much of my day includes investigating surgical implants and the potential risks involved with having an MRI or working in the scanning area. I also work closely with my supervisor to complete tasks involving protocols, accreditation and training.
How long have you been employed here?
I have been employed by Community Hospital for 27 years. I started here in 1991 as a full-time CT tech. As the special imaging department evolved, I cross-trained into MRI and eventually became a full-time MRI tech. I took a few years off to start a family, and then when I was ready to return, I was welcomed back and joined a great team of co-workers in a growing department.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
One of the big changes I have experienced was when the hospital acquired a second scanner, the stronger 3 Tesla scanner. This introduced a new set of safety issues but also included some welcomed new scanning opportunities for our department. Another change is just the growth of the department as a whole – more scanners, more surgical implants, more patients and techs, etc. All of this led me to earn my license specializing in MRI safety.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite “local gem”?
My interests outside of work usually include doing anything outdoors. I love to hike trails at local, state and national parks throughout the year. I also love gardening and all the birds and wildlife that native plants bring to my yard. I don't have a "local gem" because anywhere I can spend time with my husband, family and friends instantly becomes a "gem" to me.
What do you enjoy most about working at Community Healthcare System?
I enjoy my co-workers and all of the kind and helpful people throughout this hospital. I am blessed to know so many wonderful people, and I am very grateful for the friendships that have developed here. There will always be changes in a workplace, and I appreciate sharing all of these experiences with such caring and dedicated people. I am proud to be a part of Community Healthcare System.
