As a long-term resident and pillar in the Crown Point community, Warren Costner told his family he was glad when Community Healthcare System chose his city as the location for its newest hospital, Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center. Opened in September 2019, the center is a specialty hospital focused on inpatient rehabilitation.

“My father told me that the hospital was just what Crown Point needed,” says Warren’s son, Mark Costner. “He toured the facility during its open house in the fall, not knowing that he would be needing its services in a few months.”

On January 10, 2020, Warren experienced a stroke, stripping him of his ability to talk, walk and more. As his initial hospitalization came to an end, it was clear he needed further rehabilitation services to aid in his recovery. The rehabilitation unit at Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center was brought into consideration, with its close proximity to his home.

“We spoke with the liaison in the rehabilitation center who walked us through all of the things to consider,” says Mark. “She was very helpful and thorough, which made our decision easy.”

Warren began his treatment at Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center, making considerable improvement each week.

“When he was admitted, he was at the lowest level of ability, unable to even feed himself,” says Mark. “After beginning his treatment at the rehabilitation center, his condition improved markedly, so much so that Medicare granted him additional time to continue his recovery.”

“We are grateful for the care and attention our father has received at Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center,” says Mark. “This facility is good for Northwest Indiana, providing world-class care here in your backyard.”
