Epilepsy Care
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) provides specialized, advanced monitoring for patients with seizures or seizure-like disorders that are not well-controlled. This inpatient unit provides continuous monitoring by a team of specialists, for a comprehensive evaluation to identify what is occurring in the brain.
The EMU at Community Hospital is designated a NAEC – Level 3 Epilepsy Center, a recognition of the wide range of services provided that are essential to high-quality epilepsy care.

Your neurologist may refer you for an evaluation for several reasons:
- Confirm or rule out an epilepsy diagnosis
- Determine the type of seizures that are occurring
- Identify the starting location of the seizures in the brain
- Evaluate whether surgical intervention may be necessary
- Safely assess the effectiveness of seizure medications and make necessary adjustments
- Monitor seizure reoccurrence, including those that do not produce recognizable symptoms
- Evaluate seizure-like events that may not be epileptic in origin
Patients will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team of experts, including epileptologists, technologists, nurses, neuropsychologists and case managers. During your stay, you will receive continuous 24-hour monitoring, including:
- EEG – monitors brain wave activity
- Video monitoring – captures all physical movements
- Audio monitoring – captures sounds and speech during seizure events
- Cardiac monitoring – tracks heart rate and oxygen levels
Most stays in the EMU last an average of 3 days, with longer stays as needed.
