As families gear up for a new school year, it’s important to put health at the top of the checklist. Beyond buying school supplies and adjusting to new routines, back-to-school season is an ideal time to schedule annual wellness visits and prepare for cold and flu season.
As students return to classrooms, sports and extracurricular activities, their exposure to common illnesses increases. Annual checkups help ensure children are growing and developing properly while staying current on recommended vaccinations, including the flu vaccine.
“When children are healthy, they are better able to learn, grow and participate in the activities they enjoy,” says Mohammed Rashed, MD, a pediatrician with Powers Health Medical Group.
August is Immunization Awareness Month, making it a timely reminder for families to review recommended vaccines for children, teens and adults. Staying up to date on immunizations helps protect individuals and communities from preventable diseases such as measles, whooping cough and influenza.
Parents also can help prevent the spread of illness by encouraging frequent handwashing and keeping children home when they are sick.
Back-to-school appointments also are an opportunity to discuss important aspects of a child’s well-being, including nutrition, sleep habits and physical activity. Vision and hearing screenings are especially important because undiagnosed issues can affect learning, concentration and overall academic success.
“A back-to-school wellness visit gives families an opportunity to address any health concerns and make sure kids are ready for a safe and successful school year,” Dr. Rashed says.
