As communities across the country recognize National Breastfeeding Month in August, Powers Health is highlighting the importance of education, encouragement and expert support for families beginning their infant-feeding journey.

For many new parents, breastfeeding is a goal that comes with both excitement and questions. While breastfeeding is a natural process, it is also a learned skill for both mother and baby. That’s why access to education, encouragement and support can make all the difference in a family’s infant-feeding journey.

At Powers Health, families have access to breastfeeding resources before and after delivery, including educational classes led by certified lactation counselors. These free breastfeeding classes offered at Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart are designed to help expectant parents understand the benefits of breastfeeding, learn proper techniques and gain confidence before their baby arrives. Powers Health also provides virtual breastfeeding classes, giving expectant parents the flexibility to participate from home.

“Many parents worry about whether breastfeeding will come naturally,” said Lauren Huard, a nurse manager with Family Birthing Services at Powers Health. “The reality is that every family’s experience is unique, and having access to trusted guidance can help parents overcome common challenges and feel more confident in caring for their newborn.”

Breastfeeding provides a range of health benefits for both infants and mothers. Breast milk contains nutrients and antibodies that help support a baby’s growth and development while promoting bonding between parent and child. For mothers, breastfeeding may offer health benefits and can contribute to a positive postpartum experience.

Support is especially important during the first days and weeks after birth, when parents often have questions about feeding schedules, milk supply and infant weight gain. Through TLC: The Lactation Clinic at Community Hospital, Powers Health offers free lactation consultations and baby weight checks, giving families convenient access to professional support as they navigate those early milestones.

The need for breastfeeding support extends beyond the hospital stay. Returning to work, introducing pumping and adjusting to a growing baby’s needs can create new challenges. Access to lactation experts can help parents develop strategies that fit their lifestyle and feeding goals.

National Breastfeeding Month serves as a reminder of the value of supporting families at every stage of their breastfeeding experience. By providing education, encouragement and ongoing resources, Powers Health is helping parents build confidence and create a healthy start for their newest family members.
