Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect reminder to prioritize your breast health, starting with your mammogram. But what happens if that mammogram leads to questions, an abnormal finding or even a breast cancer diagnosis? We sat down with Raquel Gonzalez Heredia, MD, PhD, fellowship-trained and board-certified breast surgeon with Powers Health, to talk about what patients can expect and why personalized care matters.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: Mammograms are one of the most effective tools we have for detecting breast cancer early, often before symptoms develop. Early detection can lead to more treatment options and better outcomes, which is why regular screening is so important.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: First, take a deep breath. An abnormal mammogram does not automatically mean you have breast cancer. It means we need more information. The next step is meeting with the appropriate specialists, asking questions and understanding exactly what the findings mean so we can determine the best path forward.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: A new diagnosis naturally comes with a lot of questions and emotions. My first priority is listening. Every patient deserves the time and opportunity to share their concerns, understand their diagnosis and discuss all of their options. I want patients to feel informed, supported and confident about the decisions they make regarding their care.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: Breast cancer care is not one-size-fits-all. Treatment is personalized, based on each patient’s diagnosis, goals and overall health. We spend time discussing treatment options, surgical approaches and helping patients understand what to expect at every stage of their journey.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: No. In addition to caring for patients with breast cancer, I also treat a wide range of benign breast conditions and support patients who may be at higher risk for developing breast cancer. Breast health extends beyond cancer diagnoses, and we are here to help patients navigate all aspects of their care.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: Excellent breast cancer care depends on strong collaboration among specialists. Clear communication between surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and other members of the care team helps ensure patients receive coordinated, comprehensive care throughout treatment.

Dr. Gonzalez Heredia: Schedule your mammogram. Know your breast health. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you need help understanding results or navigating a diagnosis, we are here to guide and support you.
